DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, Dr. Niccolai will provide a brief histo
ry of the CDC-funded Emerging Infections Program including its purpose\,
structure\, and function. She will highlight work in three thematic areas
  – data for action\, vaccine effectiveness and impact\, and social/struct
ural determinants of health – with illustrative examples from different p
rogrammatic areas. The presentation will conclude with a brief discussion
of future directions. YSPH values inclusion and access for all participa

DESCRIPTION:Tuberculosis (TB) control efforts often overlook the critical
role of high-risk behaviors\, including alcohol and illicit drug use\, in
driving transmission and shaping treatment outcomes. This talk will expl
ore the urgent need to recognize these behaviors as key contributors to T
B burden and develop programs to engage affected populations. Current app
roaches rarely focus on these groups as drivers of TB transmission\, and
methods to measure their impact remain underutilized. I will discuss inno
vative strategies to address these gaps\, including incorporating substan
ce use metrics into studies\, evaluating the influence of these factors o
n treatment outcomes\, and leveraging respondent-driven sampling for recr
uitment combined with pathogen whole genome sequencing to find transmissi
on links. Finally\, we will highlight the inefficiency of community-wide
screening in low-prevalence settings (<1%) and propose early intervention
to interrupt transmission within high-risk populations. Our work undersc
ores the potential of tailored\, evidence-based strategies to enhance TB
control and improve outcomes in vulnerable communities. YSPH values inclu

DESCRIPTION:Today\, health care spending makes up about 17% of GDP. But wh
at does that mean? It turns out that health\, at least from the perspecti
ve of people engaged in public health\, enters our economic data in a rat
her odd way. It enters based on expenditure\, not outcome. Spending a $10
0K on patient enters GDP the same whether patient lives or dies. This has
implications for major policy discussions around public health\, medical
research\, and contributors to public health\, like environmental qualit
 y. Efforts to develop natural capital accounts in the United States and e
lsewhere have brought these issues into focus. Efforts to understand the
economic costs of COVID-19 have brought these issues into focus. Understa
nding the economic statistical system and economic statistics is increasi
ngly important for public health professionals. This talk will introduce
these systems and discuss potential changes afoot with a focus on why thi
s matters in the field of public health. YSPH values inclusion and access
